A case of polio has been detected in New York, the state's health department confirmed on Thursday. It's the first known instance of the disease in the US since 2013.
The case originated in southern Rockland County and health officials believe the patient was given an oral vaccine that's no longer used in the US.
"State and County health officials are advising medical practitioners and healthcare providers to be vigilant for additional cases," the health department said in a statement.
Polio was nearly eliminated in the US because of a widespread vaccination campaign, and vaccinated individuals have very little to be concerned about. The disease — which ravaged the nation until the 1950s and 60s — can affect the nervous system and cause muscle weakness, even leading to paralysis and death.
Last month, officials in the UK found traces of the virus in London's sewage.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that individuals get four doses of a polio vaccine when they are children.
